Extraction is the process of releasing the essential substance of a material, whether a plant, mineral, or gemstone, and transferring it into a suitable medium. At Spores of Nature, extraction lies at the heart of our alchemical approach. It allows us to make the inner forces and vibrational frequencies of each material accessible and concentrated. Depending on the material and its intended use, we work with different solvents such as water, ethanol, or vinegar. This ensures that not only the physical matter but also the hidden energetic essence can be captured and later used in our spagyric preparations.
Ultrasonic Extraction: Cavitation as Alchemical Fire
Ultrasonic extraction uses high-intensity sound waves to create a powerful mechanical transformation in the extraction medium. Thousands of tiny cavitation bubbles form in the solvent. When they collapse, they generate intense local forces. These micro explosions break open cell walls, increase solvent penetration, and release deeply hidden active substances quickly and efficiently.
In alchemical terms, this cavitation acts like an inner fire. It reveals the contained forces of a material without losing its essence to heat. While traditional methods often rely on warmth, ultrasonic extraction mechanically opens the material. Delicate compounds are preserved either because no heat is needed or because the extraction vessel can be actively cooled.

Ultrasone extraction
This method speeds up the process, reducing extraction from hours to minutes. It is also more energy-efficient and effective, yielding higher amounts of bioactive compounds and a wide spectrum of substances that are otherwise difficult to access. Enhanced solvent penetration allows even heat-sensitive compounds and finely structured molecules to be extracted without loss of integrity.
Within alchemy, this aligns perfectly with the principle of Solve et Coagula: opening cell structures so that hidden contents are released and later reintegrated into a coherent tincture. Ultrasonic extraction acts as a modern alchemical fire, liberating rather than destructive, allowing the essence of a material to emerge faster, purer, and with minimal energetic disturbance.
Soxhlet Extraction: Efficiency and Elegance in Glass
The Soxhlet extractor, developed by Franz von Soxhlet in 1879, remains one of the most efficient ways to extract active compounds from solid materials. Solvent is continuously cycled over the material, ensuring thorough and consistent extraction. The process largely runs automatically.
The device combines functionality with elegance. Condensation and solvent return create constant repetition, freeing even hard-to-access compounds. Advantages include high extraction efficiency, solvent reuse, and minimal supervision. Disadvantages include longer extraction times, higher solvent use, and exposure to heat, which requires care with heat-sensitive compounds.
For true alchemists, the Soxhlet is a perfect example of precision and repetition. Complex materials are systematically opened and concentrated, a harmony of science and craftsmanship in one elegant apparatus.

Simple Maceration: The Art of Subtle Extraction
Simple maceration is one of the oldest and most subtle ways to extract a material’s essence. The material is gently immersed in a solvent, allowing its compounds to slowly diffuse. Often this is done in an incubator or warm cabinet around 40°C, gently supporting the process.
Although simple in setup, this method should not be underestimated. The slow and patient interaction between material and solvent releases the most delicate components, which might be lost with harsher techniques. It is a gentle and rhythmic approach that respects the full subtlety and vibrational frequency of a plant or mineral.
